David’s 9th grade German teacher used MUZZY German as the class reward for good behavior. “Through MUZZY, I became a fan of the immense power of learning through story, plus the ability to learn at your own pace.” He went on to major in English literature and methods in college, and used MUZZY again when he worked as an ESL tutor with international students.
But his most memorable MUZZY moment occurred when he arrived in Azerbaijan as a Peace Corps volunteer, ready to teach English to 5th through 11th graders and train teachers to teach English. The school administrator cheerfully greeted him using the only English words he knew: “I am Big MUZZY!”
As a Peace Corps volunteer in Azerbaijan, David has seen firsthand the important role that language learning and multilingualism play in a country’s economic survival. David reports that in most homes in Azerbaijan there are at least five different regional languages spoken and approximately 18 languages in the community at large.
“In fact, I regularly hear non-English speakers of all ages quoting MUZZY from a single chance broadcast of a few episodes shown on Turkish TV -- over a year ago!” says David. He contacted Early Advantage to arrange for the MUZZY program to be sent to Azerbaijan. “The teachers are very interested in learning new methods that really work, and they all demonstrate that MUZZY works!” he says.
“MUZZY is a great conversation starter, even for children and adults with limited language experience. It uses simple, universal narrative structures, allows language absorption at a reasonable pace, and keeps student interest. It’s never boring. It uses immersion, allowing learners to start using functional language and acquire grammar easily and naturally in the process.”
